I don’t understand the reasoning behind disclosing these numbers. Do we expect the rest of the world will look at us and say, “Why, Grandmother, what big nuclear weapons you have!” Or is it some sort of international manhood-measuring contest? The idea that the disclosure of the numbers of nuclear weapons in a particular country’s arsenal will lead somehow to world peace is flawed at best.

I, too, don’t understand why disclosure is important. These numbers will not encourage India or Pakistan to release their arsenal size. If it encourages North Korea to anything it would be to over-inflate their number. It doesn’t seem to further any purpose, other than being honest. And honesty is a mediocre property at best in this case.
