Random musical thought, part the fourth

Greetings, loyal minions. Your Maximum Leader just thought that since he’s blegging for particular musical recommendations…

Does anyone (Skippy?) have a list of Randy Newman songs that your Maximum Leader should purchase?

And to counter balance your Maximum Leader’s blegs…

He recommends to you all either of Sophie Milman’s albums. They are “Sophie Milman” and “Make Someone Happy.” They are both great.

Carry on.

I Love LA

You should start by buying the complete albums of Sail Away and Good Old Boys. Those are essential. I’d also hearily recommend his new album, Harps and Angels, which is stellar. You could also get The Randy Newman Songbook, Volume 1, which is a greatest hits arranged for piano and solo vocal.

From Little Criminals (the album with Short People) I’d say pick up In Germany Before the War, Jolly Coppers on Parade, Baltimore and Albert Einstein’s Impression of Sigmund Freud in America.

Land of Dreams has finds like Dixie Flyer, Red Bandana, New Orleans Wins the War and I Want You to Hurt Like I Do. The “hit” was It’s the Money That Matters.

If I think of anything else, I’ll come back shortly.

I second the recommendations of Sail Away and Good Old Boys. I’m also quite fond of his live album, though that may be a bit of an acquired taste for most people.

A few more songs to consider: “Old Kentucky Home,” “My Life Is Good,” “Shame” and “I’m Dead (But I Don’t Know It).”

Oh, I almost forgot Bad Love, which contains such classics as Shame, The World Isn’t Fair, I Miss You and The Great Nations of Europe.

if I were you, I’d go to Amazon and drop a couple of hundred dollars for his entire catalogue on CD. Yeah, maybe your kids don’t get to eat for a few days, but we all have to make some sacrifices in life, don’t we?
